Vaccine Innovation Trends Report: Global Vaccine Research and Development Pipeline and Delivery Implications

Vaccines are essential to global public health — available to prevent more than 20 diseases, vaccines avert 3.5 to 5 million deaths each year and combat emerging infectious diseases and the spread of microbial resistance.

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated tremendous growth of the global vaccine markets and vaccine research and development (R&D). There has been increased collaboration between manufacturers, the private sector, academia and governments. Additionally, COVID-19 has resulted in unprecedented vaccine development speed and increased interest in technology transfers, which are expected to have lasting impacts on the vaccine development landscape.

Despite this growth, significant challenges remain to address barriers to equitable access and continued development of life-saving vaccines. Along with immense progress in vaccine development, COVID-19-induced disruption to health systems resulted in the largest backslide in childhood vaccination in 30 years. There is a promising and robust pipeline of vaccine candidates , both for children and adults, yet R&D remains low for many infectious diseases, and new vaccine introductions may further strain global markets and health systems.

Syneos Health, with research support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has prepared a special report outlining the current vaccine development pipeline and its potential impact on health systems. Read the report below.
